US Tourist Visa

The US Embassy recently tweeted that Indians will no longer need an invitation letter from a friend or a relative living in the US to get a Tourist Visa.

The US generally issues Visitor Visas for three purposes:

  • For business (Visa category B1)
  • For tourism (Visa category B2)
  • Or a combination of both the above (Visa category B1/B2)

Visa applicants must attend a Visa interview where the Consular Officer determines whether or not you qualify for a Visitor Visa. Applicants must meet the requirements under the US law to obtain a Visitor Visa.

The Trump Govt. has steadily been toughening its stance on immigration. Due to the uncertainties in the immigration policies and the desire to vote has led many Indian immigrants living in the US are opting for citizenship.

According to the Times of India, the last financial year recorded a 9.5% increase in US citizenships as compared to the previous year. The USCIS released a press release stating that in the last financial year, the US granted 5.77 lakh Permanent Residencies, also known as the Green Card. However, there was a 47.4% decline compared to the previous fiscal year.

As per the Dept. of Homeland Security, 52,194 Indian nationals were conferred US citizenship in the last fiscal year. This makes Indians the second-largest group to be granted US citizenship. Indians made up for 6.9% of all the new citizens and showed an increase of 2.7% as compared to the previous year.

Spouses of US citizens can apply for US citizenship in three years.

There are more than 9.2 lakh Indians waiting in the Green Card backlog of the US.
