Overseas graduate students waiting for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada have news to cheer. They need not remain in Canada while their PGWP is being processed.
From February 21 onward, graduates qualifying to work without a permit, qualify for the program even if they leave the country. They can return to Canada on receiving their PGWP.
Students have to apply for PGWP before the expiry of their study visa to be able to work whole-time. The waiting time for the PGWP result is 90 days.
To qualify for Canada’s PGWP, contenders have to meet the following criteria -
- Applicants should hold a valid study visa to apply for PGWP
- Should have completed their education to apply for PGWP. The program can be a degree, diploma or certificate program
- Students should have registered in a selected post-secondary vocational institute or in a six-month professional training program
- Should have worked for 20 hours per week during the duration of their studies
Candidates have to stop working if their application is unsuccessful
PGWP – Pathway to Canadian PR
Overseas students on completion of their graduation can apply for PGWP. On approval of their application, students can stay and work in Canada. An applicant can remain and work between eight months to three years.
In order to apply for PR, applicants should fulfill the experience requirement. Applicants should complete at least 12 months of full-time work within three years or 30 hours/week or 1560 hours for 1 year.
PGWP candidates can choose the Canadian Experience Class to apply for Permanent Residence.
The experience gained on PGWP will be beneficial in adding to the points tally and CRS score. A high CRS score will speed up the candidate's PR process, in case the student decides to opt for PR.
