In a new development, the processing system of an Australia skilled visa has undergone fresh changes. For certain types of skilled visas, the PMSOL requirement has been replaced with a new ministerial instruction. This change will be interesting to you if you are into in-demand job sectors like healthcare and education.

What has changed?

The processing of applications for certain Australia skill visa types will now replace the use of PMSOL with a new ministerial instruction. This instruction which originates from Australia’s Ministry of Immigration governs the order of processing such applications.

Now, the highest priority is given to applications lodged by applicants nominated for teaching or healthcare jobs. This is more so if the applicants are outside Australia when the application is lodged.

What’s PMSOL?

The PMSOL (Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List) is a list of skilled occupations that are assessed by the Government of Australia to fill requirements for critical skills in the country. The aim is to support the economic recovery of Australia from the COVID-19 pandemic.

At present PMSOL has 44 skilled occupations.

Where will the new priority be applied?

The new prioritization of job categories will be followed in the following instances:

  • Processing applications for nomination and visas lodged for/by accredited sponsors in any occupation
  • Processing of applications for jobs to be done in one of Australia’s designated regional areas
  • Processing of permanent as well as provisional visas that add to the migration program (barring Subclass 188 visas)
  • Processing any other application

Visas that will follow the new ministerial instruction are:

  • Subclass 482 - Temporary Skill Shortage visa
  • Subclass 189 - Skilled – Independent (Points-tested stream) visa
  • Subclass 191 - Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa
  • Subclass 858 - Global Talent visa
  • Subclass 888 - Business Innovation & Investment (Permanent) visa
  • Subclass 494 - Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa
  • Subclass 190 - Skilled – Nominated visa
  • Subclass 187 - Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa

The Immigration Department of Australia is determined to accelerate the processing of visa applications. Also, the Department wants to remove any confusion in the process by bringing together all priorities into a single new direction.

Among other amendments is the streamlining of health requirements for temporary visa applicants applying onshore.
