Job opportunities in Japan

As per a January 6, 2021 PIB Press Release – Cabinet approves signing of Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan on Partnership in "Specified Skilled Worker" – Indians will have “enhanced job opportunities to work in Japan” in 14 sectors.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of India and the Government of Japan on a basic framework for partnership regarding the proper operation of the system pertaining to “Specified Skilled Worker”.

The Press Release was posted by the Press Information Bureau [PIB], the nodal agency of the Government of India for disseminating information to the media on government programmes and policies.

As per the Press Release, the present Memorandum of Cooperation would set an institutional mechanism for partnership and cooperation between Indian and Japan on sending and acceptance of skilled Indian workers that –

  • Had qualified the required tests [for skills and Japanese language], and
  • Intended working in any of the 14 specified sectors in Japan.

Such Indian workers would be granted a new status of residence – that of “Specified Skilled Worker” – by the Government of Japan.

Under the MOC between India and Japan, a Joint Working Group is to be set up for following up the implementation of the MOC.

The MOC would enhance “enhance people-to-people contacts, foster mobility of workers and skilled professionals from India to Japan”.

Building cleaning
Construction
Electric and electronic information related industry
Fisheries
Food and beverages manufacturing industry
Food service industry
Industrial machinery manufacturing industry
Lodging
Material Processing industry
Nursing care
Shipbuilding and ship-related industry

It was in the year 2019 that Japan began implementing changes in its migration system, aiming at bringing into Japan around 350,000 medium-skilled workers over the next 5 years.
