Indian-US scientist receives highest medal of honour
Another Indian shines! Prof Thomas Kailath was on Friday awarded the US’s highest Medal of Honour, the National Medal of Science. Considered to be the pinnacle award in scientific achievement, the previous recipients of this medal included Steve Jobs and Dave Packard among many others.
President Obama in a statement said, “These scholars and innovators have expanded our understanding of the world, made invaluable contributions to their fields, and helped improve countless lives. Our nation has been enriched by their achievements, and by all the scientists and technologists across America dedicated to discovery, inquiry and invention.”
Professor Thomas Kailath moved to the US in 1957, after receiving Bachelor of Telecom Engineering from Pune. He was the first Indian born student then to receive an electrical engineering doctorate from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.
Kailath joined the Stanford as an Associate Professor in 1963, and assumed Emeritus status in 2001. Prof Kailath’s research and teaching have spanned over different fields of engineering and mathematics. He has developed path breaking news in: linear systems, communications, signal processing, probability and statistics, estimation and control, information theory, matrix and operator theory and semiconductor manufacturing.
He has also mentored many outstanding doctoral and post doctoral scholars such as Prof Arogyaswami Paulraj- the father of WIMAX and 4G. Prof Kailath has authored more than 300 journals that have led to scores of patents and several books. His book Linear Systems was widely acclaimed by engineers and mathematicians alike.
Prof Kailath is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences that are key advisory bodies to the US Government.
