As per a statement to CBC News, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] has said that the department will soon begin scheduling virtual citizenship ceremonies online for those that have had their swearing-in ceremonies postponed in view of the COVID-19 special measures.
After holding virtual ceremonies for those that already had ceremonies scheduled and also had a pressing requirement for Canadian citizenship, IRCC will then work towards the implementation of “virtual citizenship ceremonies for other cases as quickly as possible”.
Typically, a newcomer to Canada is supposed to take the solemn oath of citizenship before an official or judge, usually as a part of a group of people. Taking the oath of Canadian citizenship is the final requirement that applicants 14 years or older must fulfil in order to become the citizens of Canada.
By the time that an individual gets to the stage of taking the oath at a citizenship ceremony, various other requirements have already been met pertaining to language as well as residence. Individuals that have scheduled citizenship ceremonies have already passed a test on the history and values of Canada. The citizenship fees have also been deposited by that time.
All citizenship ceremonies had been temporarily cancelled by IRCC about 2 months ago in view of the coronavirus pandemic. At that time, it was stated that the cancelled events were to be rescheduled “in the near future”. No date for their reoccurrence was provided at that time.
This announcement by IRCC is being seen as yet another positive development for Canada immigration, for prospective immigrants as well as for those already in Canada that have had their lives impacted by the turn of events since mid-March this year.
